Topic Interest

 Hi everyone! My potential topic is going to be the influence of social media on political mobilization. I believe that social media, now more than ever, has become an important and incredibly influential way for politicians and citizens to get their point across. I'm planning on using mainly case studies, revolving around the 2016 election and Arab Spring, as well as social movements, revolving around The #MeToo Movement and The 2020 Indian Farmers' Protests. Using these I will compare and find common patterns, and how social media impacts political behavior and public discourse. I will also bring up the harm it does such as the spread of misinformation, the echo chamber effect, and the digital divide.

    Hi Ashtyn! I think your topic is not only super interesting but also very relevant to our current society. I think the case studies you chose will be great for your research. I am curious how you plan on finding the patterns you are search for. Maybe you can use some sort of coding to find specific words or phrases that are commonly used. I am excited to hear more throughout the semester!

    Hi Ashtyn! I think this is a really cool idea! Social media is definitely something that has gotten a lot more prominent lately, and doing your project on how it has affected politics is definitely something you can do a lot with. Many politicians have been using social media as a tool to promote themselves and their ideas, and there are lots of social media movements you can look at. It sounds like it will be very interesting!

 Hello! As I was reading the studies for my paper I found a gap in information relating to emerging social media. Facebook and Twitter were the most mentioned as they are already cemented social media platforms however the growth of different platforms like TikTok and Threads, can result in new information. Newer platforms operate with different algorithms, content formats, and user demographics, which may influence political communication in unique ways. Understanding how these newer platforms compare to both traditional media and older social media in shaping voter attitudes, behaviors, and engagement is crucial, especially as their popularity continues to rise among younger voters.

Hello, this is my fourth blog about revisions. Through revisions, I will explore the validity and relevance of the information presented on various social media platforms. While major news outlets like CNN or The New York Times tend to be accepted as credible sources, we often view others, like TMZ or certain social media accounts, with skepticism. This difference in perception highlights how important it is to evaluate where our information comes from and why some sources are more trusted than others.
